The first fundamental truth about the "Arab Spring" is that there never was one. The salient fact of the Middle East, the only one, is Islam. The Islam that shapes the Middle East inculcates in Muslims the self-perception that they are members of a civilization implacably hostile to the West. The United States is a competitor to be overcome, not the herald of a culture to be embraced.
Is this self-perception based on objective truth? Does it reflect an accurate construction of Islam? It is over these questions that American officials and Western intellectuals obsess. Yet the questions are irrelevant. This is not a matter of right or wrong, of some posture or policy whose subtle tweaking or outright reversal would change the facts on the ground. This is simply, starkly, the way it is.
Every human heart does not yearn for freedom. In the Islam of the Middle East, "freedom" means something very nearly the opposite of what the concept connotes to Westerners - it is the freedom that lies in total submission to Allah and His law. That law, sharia, is diametrically opposed to core components of freedom as understood in the West - beginning with the very idea that man is free to make law for himself, irrespective of what Allah has ordained. It is thus delusional to believe, as the West's Arab Spring fable insists, that the region teems with Jamal al-Madisons holding aloft the lamp of liberty. Do such revolutionary reformers exist? Of course they do...but in numbers barely enough to weave a fictional cover story. When push came to shove - and worse - the reformers were overwhelmed, swept away by a tide of Islamic supremacism, the dynamic, consequential mass movement that beckons endless winter.
That is the real story of the Arab Spring - that, and the Pandora's Box that opens when an American administration aligns with that movement, whose stated goal is to destroy America.

Andrew McCarthy hit the nail right on the head. How can we be so desperate so as to completely miss the smoke screen. The Islamic radicals (we are so afraid to call them what they are) may be fewer in number, but they are the ones that hold the power. Why is it so hard for us to understand that the Western mind and the Islamic mind is world's apart. We pride ourselves on separation of "church" and state. To them "church" and state are one...the state is there for fulfill their religion. We are so politically correct. Wake up North America. What we have so long cherished, indeed, the reason that we came about is being seriously challenged. We are the proverbial frog in the heating water. Listen to McCarthy!Product details

Spring Fever The Illusion of Islamic Democracy (Audible Audio Edition) Andrew C McCarthy Encounter Books Books Reviews
Really enjoyed this book. It gave a lot of insight into what is going on in the Middle East. I was really surprised at what the author said was going on in Turkey. After spending four years there quite a few years ago, I never thought it would go Islamist. Excellent read.
McCarthy, whose background informs well of his intimate knowledge of the material, relates the background and current situation within "radical Islam" and gives documented truth concerning our government's lack of understanding of its growth in the Middle East. Additionally, he clearly explains why democracy is in itself a wandering star that leads to uncomfortable destinations when it is used as the sole source of navigation upon the seas of international relations.
Andrew McCarthy, who prosecuted the Blind Sheikh for the first World Trade Center bombing, has made himself an authority on the politics of modern Islam. And what he tells you isn't what you read in the NY Times. His is a rather sobering view of what's happening in Turkey, North Africa, and the Mid East.
This book is right up-to-date on current events in the Middle East. I could not put the book down until I completed it. The author is well informed and, as I recall, was the prosecutor on the case involving the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. I agree with the suggested sub-title "The Illusion of Islamic Democracy" in that there is a lot more involved in democracy than just casting a vote in an election.
This is typical Andy McCarthy excellence. Known for his impeccable research and ability to help the reader connect the dots, McCarthy lays out the chilling failures of the West to fully understand (willfully or blindly) the ongoing Islamic revolution in the Middle East and its meanings for Western culture. He has every right in this book, based on his past writings, to say "I told you so". Even the casual observer, Muslim, Christian or Jew needs to read about the path being followed in the Middle East and the West's naive perceptions.
You will not be disappointed with the authors supreme knowledge of the Muslim Culture and the happenings in the Middle east. The facts presented by Mr. Mccarthy speak formthemself and the reader cannot come away from this book not having a better feel for what the MSM and DC will not relay to an inquiring American public. Sharia Law is a daunting reality and if America does not wake up soon it will overtake the greatest Democracy in History through JBTW.
We Americans know that the world would be a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous place if all nations adopted our democratic values of freedom, equality, and representative government. So when we see people in far-off places rising up and throwing off their despotic rulers we automatically believe the uprising is a democratic movement. Andrew McCarthy shows how delusional this reactive faith is. He shows how the much-heralded Arab Spring was not a democratic movement; that, in fact, democracy is incompatible within the context of Islamic culture. We cannot impose democracy on Islamic cultures either by military force or wishful thinking. It's critical that we understand that truth; McCarthy's book is the place to start.
